Accreditation, Credentialing and Quality Improvement in Diagnostic Medical Sonography: A Literature Review by Kim Sorrentino, associate professor of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, was recently published in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Vol. 35, Issue 5).
Kim’s research uncovered few regulations associated with facility accreditation and individual credentialing in the diagnostic medical sonography field. Her review summarizes findings from 19 research studies. Employing sonography specialty and geographical regions as criteria for comparison, the studies revealed vast differences with respect to facility accreditation status. The project was partially funded through a research grant from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and the review revealed numerous examples of positive connections between accreditation and improved quality.
Along with teaching at GCC, Kim is involved in work on the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and Achieving the Dream (ATD). Kim recently started as a Guided Pathways and Program Consolidation Manager in the Division of Student & Academic Affairs at the CSCU System Office focusing on program alignment.
