Gateway Community College’s Student Community Outreach Programs through the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Programs and the Center for Service-Learning will be leading an Alternative Spring Break to Annville, Pennsylvania in March 2013. The trip is part of Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge. Applications are due by Friday, January 25 . Students can find the application at:
According to Roberta Prior, GCC’s director of Student Leadership Program and Activities, the program presents an exciting educational immersion experience for students to learn more about the diverse political and social issues that contribute to the existence of substandard housing in Eastern Pennsylvania, while witnessing, engaging with, and reflecting upon the efforts being undertaken by community members to eradicate this need.
Students will spend a week volunteering with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, contributing valuable service hours towards the construction of a single-family home. In addition, Prior said, students will have opportunities to participate in community-centric reflection activities and educational opportunities. This culminates in one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to experience a new culture, improve their resumes, expand their horizons, gain valuable job readiness skills, and contribute valuable service hours to a community in need.
Be one of the first Gateway students to call yourself an Alternative Breaker and submit your application today!
