GCC Celebrates Veterans with Ceremony and Art Exhibi

The Gateway Community College (GCC) office of Veteran’s Affairs hosts two important events in honor of Veteran’s Day.
The NewAlliance Art Gallery opened on November 7 with Remembering and Remembrance, in partnership with the Giant Steps Program, an ongoing group-oriented recovery program for Veterans who are encouraged to use the creative arts alongside other therapies that assist with adjusting to life after service. The show that features watercolors, acrylics, oils, and other media. Remembering and Remembrance will be on display November 8-11 from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
On November 9 the GCC Office of Veteran’s Affairs hosted a commemorative ceremony for veterans on campus. Members of the GCC community gathered for a special celebration to honor veterans for their service and dedication to our country. The ceremony, which was held in the Curran Community Center, opened with a moment of silence. Highlights of the ceremony included remarks from director of Career Student Engagement and Veteran’s Affairs, Kellie Byrd-Danso and Veteran's Affairs Coordinator, Rick Palinko. The solemn event culminated in a rededication of the Oath of Enlistment and the Commemorative Challenge Coin.
Gateway Community College is particularly mindful of the needs of students and staff who have served in the military. Among the available resources is the Veterans’ Oasis, where veterans can gather before, after and between classes, academic advising, career counseling, a veteran-to-veteran work-study mentoring program and a veteran certifying officer who can assist veterans with their benefits.
Gateway Community College is committed to providing high quality services to students, faculty and staff who are Veterans.
