GCC Events Celebrate Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a month-long celebration honoring the many extraordinary contributions and accomplishments of African Americans to U.S. history, and Gateway Community College (GCC) has numerous events planned as a tribute.   

Originally created as a week-long celebration known as “Negro History Week,” and created by noted African American Historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, the celebration was eventually extended to the entire month of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.  In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month to honor the overlooked achievements of Black Americans throughout U.S. history.  

Following are events planned at GCC:

Wednesday, February 13 – BlacKkKlansman Movie11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Room S211 

Wednesday, February 20 – Black History Game Show  12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Room N100

Thursday, February 28 – Liberty Bell Celebration  12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Room N100

Thursday, February 28 – Book Discussion If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin  1:45 p.m.
