Gateway Community College mathematics professor Rachael Schettenhelm was recently elected president by the Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges in Connecticut (MATYCONN). She will serve a two-year term.
Professor Schettenhelm joined the full-time faculty of GCC in 2004 and currently serves as the facilitator for part-time math instructors in the College Advancement Studies (CAS) department. In addition to teaching developmental math courses, she is on the team that is crafting Gateway's response to the PA12-40 legislation on remediation.
“Rachael is a dynamic leader: knowledgeable, dependable, engaged, and – most accomplished when it comes to insights and achievement," said Professor Russell Gaudio, Chair of the CAS Department at GCC. "She knows how to get the job done. MATYCONN, indeed, has chosen most wisely in electing her its president."
MATYCONN is the Connecticut affiliate of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), which promotes and increases awareness of the role of two-year colleges in mathematics education. MATYCONN meets biannually to maintain a continual dialogue among all the two year colleges represented on matters pertaining to the mathematics that is taught at the Two Year Colleges, to continually improve the teaching of mathematics, to promote and enhance the professional welfare of all teachers, and to be available to assist in any area pertaining to mathematics.
