GCC’s Black Student Association Hosts Panel Discussion

Share

The Black Student Association (BSA) honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a January 30 panel discussion on the topic “Stand Your Ground” – what it meant in Dr. King’s time and what it means in 2013. The panel included Thomas Ullmann, a clinical visiting lecturer in Law at the Yale Law School and a public defender for the New Haven Judicial District; Rev. John H. Scott III, GCC professor of Business; New Haven Police Sergeant Anthony Campbell; and Black Student Association President Tyler Harris.

“The panelists discussed the ways Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others stood their ground for justice,” said Kellie Byrd Danso, M.Ed., NCC, GCC’s director of Career Services and a BSA co-advisor. “The panelists told inspirational stories about how they had to stand their ground at different times in their lives.” She said a number of students also shared their own personal stories.

Byrd Danso said she hoped those in attendance not only learned from the discussion but would be “inspired to take a stand for what’s right.”
